Subliminal learning is a technique of learning through which things are learnt without the need for any application of concentration or thought. It works through stimulating those areas of the brain which control vision and hearing on a subconscious level.
Subliminal advertising has certainly been used; by major corporations and political parties; for which penalties have been imposed. And whilst these have been very basic image based messaging, there is a chance that things learned could be turned to greater good for learning.
Essentially, subliminal learning could of course mean that we are able to learn without having to put any work in. Though this is not quite how it works of course; using it as a process to learn alongside other more traditional techniques and hard work however, it is perfectly plausible.
Whilst it is only natural to be cynical regards our minds being affected subconsciously; there are interesting points of reference that could be called upon that could, potentially, be indicative of the subliminal learning process in action.
We all have had that experience of a song staying in our head through most of the morning; or more likely and annoying, a portion of a song. This is essentially subliminal planting; there has been a hook somewhere, so we remember it. Such thought can be applied to most songs we enjoy too; after all, how many of us sit down and learn a song. It is more about repetition and subliminal planting therefore.
Think too about how we learn to speak as children. Again, repetition and mimicking the people around us is key, but what of words we learn independently? Our vocabularies are far greater than that of words we knowingly study.
And it is here, that studies start from, into how it could be exploited. Potentially, if a sound theory, learning new and more skills could become achievable for us all.
Studies into the concepts are quite young of course, though those doing the researching are thus far happy and surprised with the results. Skeptics remain of course, and it is true that some skills remain unaffected by subliminal learning techniques.
Languages may be able to be learned, but only in part; language structure and rule of languages is complex of course and make up a so called "high process" of learning. Much the same can be said of subjects like math and science too. However, where concentration is not necessarily needed in such a high state; with music and words for example, subliminal learning may well be applicable.
